About: Dr. Guy Gorrell
With an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of the Okanagan, Dr. Guy Gorrell pursued his Doctor of Optometry at Pacific University, where he graduated with distinction. Dr. Gorrell’s educational interests and skills were enhanced through clinical rotations in clinics offering full-scope optometry, focusing on the medical aspects of optometry, both surgical co-management and ocular pathology.
Upon graduation in 2003, Dr. Gorrell brought his education and experience back to his home in Whitehorse, where he was able to work side-by-side with his father, Dr. Ronald Gorrell. Upon Dr. Ronald Gorrell’s retirement, after 40 years of optometric service to the Yukon, the practice changed hands and remains locally owned and operated by Dr. Guy Gorrell. Dr. Gorrell holds hospital privileges at Whitehorse General Hospital and greatly appreciates having the opportunity to continue to offer care for multiple generations of Yukoners.
Dr. Gorrell takes pride in remaining very current in his education and his practice philosophy. This has led him to numerous equipment upgrades allowing him to be proud of maintaining one of the most technologically advanced practices. Dr. Gorrell’s practice has the latest equipment for the early detection of conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration and various retinopathies such as diabetes. On many occasions, having these tools has allowed Yukoners to avoid travelling out of the Yukon for care because diagnosis and management can often be done locally.
Dr. Gorrell feels it is of the utmost importance to create a personal bond between himself and his patients and educate them with the knowledge they need to understand whatever eye condition they may have. His focus on patient care and patient education will contribute not only to the visual health of his patients but also to their overall well-being.
Away from his clinical responsibilities, Guy enjoys mountain biking, snow biking, and spending time with family.
